Medical sales and Pay per click advertising

For most people in medical sales recruitment, the sites which appear on the front page of a google search for 'medical sales' are those with websites which most accurately match the search criteria, right? ...Wrong!

Look again and you'll see down the right hand side of the page, separated by a vertical line 'sponsored links'. You may also see 1 to three results in a blue or yellow bar at the top of the page. These websites are not the most accurate search results, but the highest bidders for 'paid' listings for that phrase.

So, to clarify, a google search will return two sets of results on the page

  1. The organic results, ie that which google decides are the best match for the search for medical sales

  2. Sponsored listings where the top positions are occupied by those prepared to pay the most for that phrases, and they pay every time someone clicks on the medical sales link.

There are some fundamental differences between organic listings and pay per click (PPC) advertising. Organic search listings can take a long time to achieve, with considerable effort and expert knowledge to gain top results. It's highly competitive, so positions can be lost as well as gained, and you will need to keep working at it to hold position. Most medical sales recruitment agencies will likely not have the internal resources to do this and so will need to turn to external SEO agents to gain better positions. In competitive markets like medical sales, gaining and maintaining top positions can be costly, and once achieved won't be secure without continues investment.

PPC, in comparison, can be instant, with a new website able to achieve the top of the front page through bidding at the right price, The downside, is that the price you need to bid to gain a certain position is fluid, and dependant upon others, the more that learn about it and pay, the bigger and bigger spend required to maintain a position. That said, you can set budgets, so that when your budget is expired on given day, your advert is taken down, thereby minimising your risk, but also your advert! In addition, although there are measures in place to minimise this, there is little to stop others clicking on your link here and there to swallow up your budget.

PPC can, in itself, be a complex topic, for example “medical sales” will attract only clicks (and charges) from people tapping in that exact phrase. The same without the “ and google will start accepting clicks from only part of your phrase, eg 'sales' which will of course open the flood gates somewhat, and in many cases generate useless traffic at a cost.

In summary, if you are in medical sales recruitment and are in need of some immediate exposure, PPC advertising can certainly achieve instant fame on google. However, it may be an idea to seek professional help, as costs can run away with themselves before you realise it, and google has a habit of throwing traffic at you that you didn't really want, isn't effective, and costs dearly!
