Australian medical sales reps under fire
A report by a major Australian consumer association has suggested that medical sales operations in Australia are busy promoting new expensive treatments instead of the most effective ones.
It's a highly sensitive debate which could so easily ignite over UK medical sales as well. The report points out that there are thousands of medical sales representatives compared to only 150 independent drug advisors. It focuses on the fact that promotion is only devoted to new and expensive drugs with no attention given to others which are perhaps more effective but cheaper and older.
The conclusion of the report called 'pushing pills' is that medical sales reps should be significantly reduced and replaced by independent drug advisors.
The pharmaceutical industries response to this is that the consumer association are not qualified to make their comments and should stick to assessing washing machines.
Perhaps the main point missed is that the pharmaceutical industry needs to be healthy in order to make a profit to continue producing new and innovative medicines. Preventing medical sales operations from generating profits is a short term financial gain for which losses will ultimately create losses in terms of medical progress.
