Hospital pharmacy jobs

The hospital pharmacist’s role involves the safe and correct distribution of prescribed medicines to both inpatients (staying on the wards) and outpatients (visiting clinics) within the hospital environment.

Unlike community pharmacy jobs, treating inpatients can involve the treatment of more acutely ill patients, often on many combinations of treatments, where individual cases can be far more complex, and mistakes can be far more dangerous.

For inpatients you are likely to involved with ward rounds where you will interact with doctors treating patients. Although they will act as the authority figure in determining what treatments to prescribe they may refer to you for your expertise and advice on how different combinations of drugs may act when used together.

As an integral part of the overall healthcare set up, you may also have input in hospital formulary decisions, the hospital formulary being the pharmacist’s and Doctor’s point of reference for what type of treatments will be used in each particular scenario. Hence in the pharmaceutical sense, hospital pharmacy jobs are more challenging than their community counterparts, and it will be essential that you keep abreast of advancements in knowledge such as new clinical trials.

A hospital pharmacist is also a point of reference for Doctors in the community. If they are looking for more information on drugs initiated on their patients by the hospital, for example more details on the clinical evidence surrounding the product or perhaps details of potential interactions with other drugs which the Doctor is considering using.

In larger hospitals, particularly teaching hospitals, hospital pharmacy jobs are often specialised to a particular therapy in the same way that Doctors roles are, giving the pharmacist to develop the expertise to become an authority figure in a speciality and as such a pharmaceutical point of reference for physicians with respect to drugs, there clinical evidence and usage.

As careers in pharmacy, hospital pharmacy jobs offer good career hierarchies to pursue, starting from junior positions in small peripheral hospitals through to the senior management roles in the teaching hospitals of London.

I final career option of note for the hospital pharmacist is teaching, or lecturing in the teaching hospitals, offering the opportunity to share years of learning and experience with younger students looking to develop their expertise.
