Healthcare jobs become the popular choice
Healthcare jobs have always been an alternative to pharmaceutical sales jobs but to many, they have come second place. Recent changes in the pharm industry have seen Healthcare jobs take a higher priority on the wishlist of potential healthcare sales candidates.
Up until recently few pharmaceutical sales people ventured over to healthcare jobs in a change in direction for their career. There are, after all distinct differences between the pharmaceutical and healthcare industries which render them suitable to different types of sales candidates.
The last 24 months has seen dramatic changes in the pharmaceutical industry with almost all of the companies listed in the top 20 of the industry's companies undergoing major structural changes with it's sales force, and in most cases this amounted to downsizing.
Some of the large pharmaceutical giants have grown so big in terms of their sales structures that one simple downsizing has not been possible, leaving a more messy task of downsizing in stages, whilst trying to cling onto staff and maintain a sales operation in the intervening periods.
In contrast, the healthcare jobs industry has remained comparably stable. Having never entered into the 'buddy' reps arena which lead to the pharmaceutical industry growing too much too quickly in terms of sales headcount.
Now, the recruitment market is awash with medical sales people from the pharmaceutical industry. Whilst there are vacancies on the pharmaceutical side, as many of 50% of candidates appear to be considering a move to healthcare jobs in search of future security. Whilst there appears to be some settling in pharmaceutical sales structures now, it is likely we will continue to see further changes.
