Medical sales jobs in the credit crunch

Employees in all sectors are getting worried about the credit crunch, so are medical sales jobs in the same position as others such as construction?

When the UK economy started to slow, people in medical sales jobs began to chant the old mantra "people will always be sick", which is of course true.  However, no where is safe from the effects of the current economy.  The government needs to save money and become more efficient where ever it can, and the NHS is not excluded.

Already, in the last couple of years thousands of medical sales jobs have been lost with company after company downsizing.  What has happened 'is' an indirect consequence of economic pressures.  The government squeezes the NHS, the NHs squeezes the pharmaceutical industry which then has to cut costs to maintain profits.  One of the biggest costs of any pharma company is funding medical sales jobs.

All this said, people 'will' always be sick.  The pharmaceutical industry had become too populated with medical sales people.  Once the present downsizing is complete, it will likely be one of the more stable careers to enter.  The 'healthcare sales jobs' market, that being equipment, disposables etc has not suffered in the same way, primarily because it has kept relatively lean sales structures throughout.  For those looking for stability in the current climate, Healthcare sales may be the market to consider.
