Nurse of the Year quits over NHS targets

Justine Whitaker is leaving nursing to become a college lecturer after winning the Nurse of the Year award due to excessive paperwork and recent government reforms.

This couldn't be worse publicity at a time when the government is taking a hammering from all angles.  It's been a growing trend recently with nurses leaving for all sorts of other roles such as commercial roles as nurse advisors in the pharmaceutical industry or roles in education such as Justine.

Justine explains that as a nurse she wants to nurse, every bit of new legislation means extra time sat at a desk and not nursing.  Whilst many nurses like Justine recognise the need for changes within the NHS, she feels the government just doesn't understand the impact of it's decisions on the ground level.

The Royal College of Nursing's Peter Carter said: "It saddens us that such a distinguished nurse is leaving the NHS. We hope that the problems she has highlighted will be addressed."
