OTC sales jobs

Fifteen years ago, most pharmaceutical companies had field forces selling over the counter medicines, that is medicines not requiring prescriptions, to retail pharmacies.  They would carry a broad portfolio from pain killers to creams and negotiate deals at local pharmacy level. 

Eventually pharmacists began to realise that their profits were driven by the prices they were able to buy at from pharmaceutical companies, and in turn they realised that they could buy cheaper in groups.  Over the last 15 years, the majority of pharmacies have now joined together into buying groups in order to gain keener prices.

As a consequence, the need for the traditional OTC rep visiting retail pharmacy has gone and has been replaced by comparably high powered National account managers who sell to wholesalers and buying groups.
